Why Teach English in Korea? 5 Awesome Reasons
So you’re considering teaching English in Korea or you’re just interested in why so many you people know are suddenly up and leaving for that country next to that other country with the guy who executed his uncle.
So, why teach English in Korea?
Well, here’s a video with 5 reasons why Korea is kind of cool…
So there you have it.
If you got over my face before you finished watching, here’re the 5 reasons to answer that “why teach English in Korea?” question that always comes up:
1) Adventure
Not everyone will get the chance to go live in a foreign country for a year. If you go one thing is for sure – the whole experience will be one big adventure.
Things like these make it crazy cool:
- Culture
- Partying
- Interesting food
- Nori bangs (like karaoke)
- Kitten bars
- Short people
- Temples
- Technology
Korea is one interesting place. Even the little things like trying to work out how to use the high speed trains can be a mini adventure (they have speeds up to 350km/h by the way).
2) Freedom
You’re out in the big bad world, probably knowing nobody, in a strange foreign country… Which gives you more FREEDOM than most people will have in their entire lives.
- You’re independent
- You can do what you want
- You have a lot of free time outside of teaching hours.
Sounds pretty great to me.
3) Money
And you’re going to be making some serious bank. Check out this post about teaching English in Korea salary for a full breakdown.
Essentially you’re making a salary of about R22 000 per month ($2000) plus a bunch of bonuses like:
- Free accommodation
- Tax free
- Flight over paid for
- A nice bonus
With living expenses as little as 50% of your salary you’ve got some nice disposable income.
4) Travel
Then there’s the travel. If you just want to put away the money you make, that’s fine of course. However, if you want to travel Asia there’s hardly a better position to be in.
With the money you’re making plus the cheap flights around Asia, you can do it all.
- Thailand
- Japan
- China
- Vietnam
- Indonesia
Wherever you want to go you can pretty easily get there from South Korea.
5) Be young and stupid
Like I mentioned in the video, I like the idea of this one a lot. Just a disclaimer… When I say “stupid” I don’t mean ignorant and oblivious to sensitive issues and cultural norms.
What I’m trying to get at is that while you’re young you should get out and try stuff. Go do things you wouldn’t normally do. Push your comfort zone. Go live life a little.
Being in Korea gives you that opportunity to live spontaneously and avoid the “getting boring” phenomena that a lot of people think is synonymous with growing up.
